“It is not a boomerang but a bundle of baling wire and it’s how we send our love to one another sometimes in the field.”
This collection represents over forty years of Cory Brown’s poetry, in a bilingual edition translated by Taiwanese poet Ruey-shan Sandy Chen. Brown has previously published five books of poetry, with over a hundred poems appearing in US literary journals. Chen also provides an introduction analyzing Brown’s composition method which gives extemporaneity its due, so to speak, in writing poems. He inherited this method from A.R. Ammons, his mentor at Cornell University. The introduction also analyzes the influence another Cornell mentor, Robert Morgan, has had in Brown’s use of concrete images to provide rich detail in the telling of narratives. Other equally important influences on Brown include the discursive postmodern style of the American poet John Ashbery, and his own study of Taoism and Buddhism. It’s apparent that the Chinese literary tradition, as Chen explains, has been significant for Brown, expanding his vision of human thought and feeling, “saving me,” as Brown has written, “from the strict confines of Western ideology.” This collection will be of interest to both American and Chinese poetry readers, as well as to those interested in the process by which poets harness and express their creativity.
